DSB #58 – VIP box at local sporting event (ambiguous enough?)

Buffalo Sabres v Florida Panthers

It’s Star Wars day at the local hockey game and somehow we secured VIP box seats and recorded an illegal episode. You’re lucky I didn’t just drop the audio track of “The Empire Strikes Back” in place of this podcast, so, you know, enjoy… or something. Meso tired.

Music by that dude who produces the NFL theme, Supernova, La Belle Mafia, D12, Futuristic Sex Robots and Jai Paul. Small nod to Outkast in there somewhere.

DSB #31 – Tick free

Sans Dandy Will this week, the remaining Brawlers imbibe Crystal Skull Head Vodka (triple filtered through DIAMONDS) and a 10 year Laphroaig scotch; a spirit that makes us really wish we knew more about scotch. The subjects are: GraniteCon, state political mailers and probably the last segment you’ll want to hear about bin Laden’s death.

Music by Violent Femmes, Daft Punk and Grand Master Flash.

A visit to The Glenlivet distillery

Scotland is a beautiful country, and the Highlands more beautiful still:

As mentioned in DSB #29, the missus and I visited Scotland back in the fall. And being a proud member of the Dandy Scotch Brawlers, I knew I couldn’t return home to my brothers in booze without having visited at least one distillery. Thus it was that we braved the Scottish roads and left side driving to make our way from Edinburgh north to The Glenlivet Distillery:

Available that day were samples of Glenlivet 18 year. And as luck  would have it, the missus was pregnant at the time, meaning more for me:

And, yea, it was good.

It’s a “storehouse,” not a brewery

As was discussed in DSB#11, there is, alas, no Guinness brewery tour available in Dublin. Instead, visitors are charged €15 ($21.62 on Aug. 4, 2009) to tour the “storehouse” at St. James Gate, the 64-acre headquarters of Guinness. Instead of seeing how the stout is made, visitors must content themselves to be told how it’s made.

Some say the storehouse tour is nothing but a tourist trap, and for the most part they’re right. It’s impressively slick, for sure, but the best thing about the tour is its end, when one arrives at the Gravity Bar, an admittedly impressive bar eight floors above the ground that offers spectacular 360 degree views of Dublin and environs. Here visitors are given a “complimentary” pint.

A much more authentic – and cheaper – experience, of course, would be to order a €5 pint at real Dublin pub like Kehoe’s or Long Hall. But there will always be suckers like this guy, who fell for the Guinness marketing claptrap back in 2006:

#6 Show Notes

Old Grand-Dad Whiskey, of particular acclaim from it’s inclusion in the George Thorogood song “I Drink Alone” is one of a large field of American Bourbon Whiskeys that made their name as medicinal spirits during Prohibition and frankly, if this doesn’t make you blind it has an equal chance of curing whatever nagging blindness you are afflicted with. The Brawlers were immediately turned off by OGD’s oily mouthfeel and rough flavor. Continue reading
