Tipping: a condescending practice

Here is a very good article from the New York Times Magazine that discusses tipping. I particularly liked the portion regarding the history of the practice.

Not only is tipping arbitrary (Why do we tip wait staff and not bank tellers? They both provide us personal service.) as I argued in the podcast, but it is in essence condescending as it amounts to, in the author’s words, providing “a sprinkle of change for social inferiors.”

How about we dignify these tip-based professions with a living wage?
